This page relates ‘Analysis of Goddess Parameshvari’ of the study on the Jivanandana (in English) which is a dramatic play written by Anadaraya Makhin in the 18th century. The Jivanandana praises the excellence of Advaita Vedanta, Ayurveda (medical science) and Dramatic literature as the triple agency for obtaining everlasting bliss.

To have a healthy body one has to be cured of the many diseases that attack the body. When serious illnesses take control over the body, Rasa and Gandhaka are needed. Medicines prepared with both these are the best cure for severe diseases like Yakṣmā and Pāṇḍu.

Goddess Pārvatī’s potency is the chemical Gandhaka and Rasa is the Lord’s energy. Hence it becomes imperative to please them to obtain them.[1]

Proctor of the World

Goddess Pārvatī is the embodiment of the Lord’s compassion; she is forever involved in protecting the world (I.43/44; pp.52-3):

bhagavataḥ dayārūpaiveyam | āta eva lokarakṣaṇārthā pravṛttiretasyāḥ |

She is ever merciful towards her devotees, and this led her to slay the asuras, Madhu and Kaiṭabha who troubled the worlds (I.43):

bhaktiprahvamahendramukhyamakhabhukprārabdhabhūristava-prādurbhāvitanirbharapramadayā kāruṇyabhājā yathā |
nidrābhaṅgamavāpitena hariṇā dīptaujasā dhātayāmāsāte madhukaiṭabhāvatibalau sā kena vā varṇyate ||

She is compassion incarnate and she plays a vital role in lord Śiva’s līlā of creation, preservation and destruction of the entire universe (VII.23):

niṣkriyasyāpi devasya jagatsṛṣṭyādikarmasu |
pravṛttiṃ kurvatīṃ devīṃ prapadye bhaktavatsalām ||

Bhaktavatsalatā

Her bhaktavatsalatā has no bounds; to save both the heavens and the earth, she crushed Mahiṣāsura–who was powdering the surface of the earth with his hoofs and was creating havoc on the earth,–in a fearful battle with her powerful trident (I.44):

dūroddhūtaviṣāṇakoṭidhaṭanācūrṇīkṛtāmbhodharaṃ preṅkhatpādacatuṣṭayīkhurapuṭaprakṣuṇṇāpṛthvītalam |
kalpāntābhrakaṭhorakaṇṭhaninadatrastatrilokījanaṃ vikrāntaṃ mahiṣāsuraṃ yudhi purā niccheda śūlena yā ||

Her valour

She, being the embodiment of all the deities, is also known as Caṇḍikā and had been the nemesis for the various demons like Caṇḍa, Muṇḍa, Dhūmralocana and Raktabīja (I.44/45; p.56):

khalu parameśvarī bahuvidha-devatāśaktirūpa-āvayavā pracaṇḍaparākramakhaṇḍita-caṇḍamuṇḍa dhūmralocana-raktabīja-prabhṛti-dānavamaṇḍalā śrūyate caṇḍikānāmadheyeti |

She, as Durgā vanquished the powerful demon brothers Śumbha and Niśumbha and brought peace and happiness to the deities of the cardinal directions (I.45):

śastracchinnasurārisainyapiśitāgrāsagrahaprītimatkaṅkakroṣṭari saṅgare suravadhūmuktaprasūne sthitam |
devyā śumbhaniśumbhadānavavadhapraklinnācittastuvadrudrendrāgnikṛtāntanairṛtajalādhīśānilaśrīdayā ||
