This page relates ‘Analysis of Kasa’ of the study on the Jivanandana (in English) which is a dramatic play written by Anadaraya Makhin in the 18th century. The Jivanandana praises the excellence of Advaita Vedanta, Ayurveda (medical science) and Dramatic literature as the triple agency for obtaining everlasting bliss.

The dramatist introduces Kāsa as a sincere servant of both Yakṣmā and Pāṇḍu.

In his first appearance in the prelude (Praveśaka) of the second Act, Kāsa carries the message from his master Yakṣmā, about Jīva’s entry into the Puṇḍarīkapura for meditation, to Pāṇḍu, the minister of their team.

The commentary explains that sinceKāsa aided by Chardi (vomiting) and Kaṇṭakaṇḍūti (irritation in the throat) (depicted as his wives), develops into Kṣayaroga, if not attended in the early stages, he is portrayed as Yakṣmā’s servant (p.66):

upekṣite kāse sa eva kālena kṣayatvena pariṇamatīti vicārya kāso yakṣmaṇaśceṭatvena prathamaṃ parikalpitaḥ |
