This page relates ‘Analysis of Jnana and Vijnana’ of the study on the Jivanandana (in English) which is a dramatic play written by Anadaraya Makhin in the 18th century. The Jivanandana praises the excellence of Advaita Vedanta, Ayurveda (medical science) and Dramatic literature as the triple agency for obtaining everlasting bliss.

The dramatist, clearly makes the viewer understand that there is difference of opinion between Jñāna and Vijñāna. The same sharp knowledge, which excels in all divisions is thus depicted by the dramatist as two characters.

Though Jñāna guides Jīva to obtain that eternal bliss, suitable time for that would arise only when the soul matures with devotion. Vijñāna is a practical life science which is required during the hours of crisis.

In this play, the crisis of body attacked by diseases, intensifies to affect every minute part of the limbs of the human being in the form of various severe diseases; medical remedies are to be implemented to eradicate these diseases completely to restore that normal healthy status, which is the original condition of the human being. In such a situation, Vijñāna alone can practically do this.

To impress this on the viewer, the dramatist applies this idea of ill feeling between those two abstracts. The brilliant playwright does not present this Jñāna Śarmā character directly on the stage; the viewer is made to perceive this character only by suitable references by other characters. Finally, in the concluding section through the lord Śiva’s advice, the unity between these characters is restored.
