Jivanandana of Anandaraya Makhin (Study)

This page relates ‘Advaitic aspects of Act III’ of the study on the Jivanandana (in English) which is a dramatic play written by Anadaraya Makhin in the 18th century. The Jivanandana praises the excellence of Advaita Vedanta, Ayurveda (medical science) and Dramatic literature as the triple agency for obtaining everlasting bliss.

In the third Act, the play wright describes practical basic efforts to be taken by the Jīva in his great mission of penance: Jīva at first should follow the rules and regulations dictated by the Srutis and Smṛtis.

In Yoga Śāstra, it is said that ‘Padmāsana’, a type of āsana (sitting posture) when done properly becomes the first step in regulating one's self.

And it has to be performed by Jīva as said in the Śāstra by placing the right foot on the left thigh and the left (foot) on the right thigh, crossing the hands behind the back one should firmly take hold of the toes (the right toe with the right hand and the left toe with the left hand), placing the chin on the chest and looking at the tip of the nose; the Padmāsana destroys the diseases of the Yogins:

vāmorūpari dakṣiṇaṃ ca caraṇaṃ saṃsthapya vāmaṃ tathā
 ; dakṣorūpari paścimena vidhinā dhṛtvā karābhyāṃ dṛḍham |
āṅguṣṭhau hṛdaye nidhāya cibukaṃ nāsāgramālokayet
  etad vyādhivināśakāri yamināṃ padmāsanaṃ procyate ||[1]

After this, the Jīva should remain for a very long time in such a condition (Padmāsana); by this, the antaḥkaraṇa becomes purified; and in that purified state blossoms bhagavadbhakti which enriches the experience of bliss in the hṛt-puṇḍarīka and the Jīva gets the vision of the Supreme.[2]

Through this experience of the hero, the dramatist highlights the effects of the practice of the Yogic principles.
