Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Lineages of Turvasu’ of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

(Fifth son of Yayati) Turvasu’s son was Garva and his son was Gobhānu. Gobhānu’s son wasthe invincible knight Trisāri. Trisāri had a son named Karandhama and he had a son named Marutta. He accepted (because of being childless) Puru king Dusyanta as his son. Thus due to the curse given by Yayāti at the time of change of old age, the dynasty of Turvasu entered the Puru dynasty. Dusyanta’s son was king Varūtha and Āṇḍīra (Bhuvamanyu) was originated by Varūtha. Āṇḍīra had five sons named Sandhāna, Pāṇḍya, Kerala, Cola and Karṇa. Their prosperous countries became famous in their name namely Pāṇḍya , Cola and Kerala .[1]
