Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Lineages of Pitri’ of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

There were also other stunning Loka (place) called Vibhrāja in heaven, where the Pitara named Barhiṣad reside. Hundreds sons of Maharṣi Pulastya, who are full of penance and yoga , are full of great self-power, are very fortunate and provide abbey to their devotees reside there. There was a girl of these Pitara who was known as Pīvarī. That Yoginī and Yogamātā Pīvarī meditated very hard. Lord Viṣṇu was pleased with her penance and appeared before her. Then Pīvarī asked Śrīhari if he is happy with her, then give her a yogi, very beautiful, superior among speaker and caring husband. Lord Viṣṇu told Pīvarī that when Maharṣi Vyasa’s son Śuka will take birth, at that time she will be the wife of that Yogācārya . By their relation a girl take birth named Yogābhyāsparāyaṇā Kṛtvī. Then Pīvarī surrender Kṛtvī to Pāñcāl Nareśa . Kṛtvī also be famous as ‘Gou’ being the mother of Brahmadatta. Subsequently Pīvarī have four sons named Kṛṣṇa, Goura, Prabhu and Śambhu.[1]

Similarly, in the Sūryamandal there are other famous loka (place) called Marīcigarbha , where Angirā’s son named Haviṣmāna resides as a Pitara. He is the Pitara of kings, who are the providers of heaven and salvation. This Pitara has one girl named Yaśodā, who is Pañcajana’s daughter in law, wife of Anśumān, mother of Dilīpa and grandmother of Bhagīratha.[2]

There are also other Pitṛloka named Kāmadugha, who provide the result of desired wishes and enjoyments, where the Pitara named Susvadhā resides. He is famous as Ājyapa in the loka of Pitar Prajāpati Kardama. This Pitara has a girl named Virajā, who is the wife of King Nahuṣa and mother of King Yayāti. Later she went to Brahmaloka and became famous as Ekāṣṭakā.[3]

Above the Universe there is a loka called Mānasa , in which the Pitara Somapa resides. This is the Pitara of Brāhmins . His daughter is famous by name Narmada. Narmada has come to the south and flows as a river, by which is purifying all being. In the tradition of these Pitaras, all Manus create subjects in the beginning of the Universe.[4]
