Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Vows (Vrata) in the Matsya Purana’ of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

Vows (Vrata) in the Matsya Purāṇa

In the Matsya Purāṇa , various rituals and customs of Hinduism are also mentioned in different chapters. Such as–various vows, donations, sacrifices etc.

Madanadvādaśī Vow:

This vow is described in detail in the seventh chapter of the Matsya Purāṇa . In the past, the early stages of Vaśiṣṭha performed this vow. This vow is to be observed on the twelfth day of the month of Chaitra . Whoever observes this vow will be freed from all sins and will get the grace of Lord Viṣṇu and will be blessed with the best son in this world. The rules of observing this vow are well described in verses 7 to 27 of the seventh chapter.

Nakṣatrapuruṣa Vow:

Lord Mahādeva gave knowledge about this vow to Nārada. In the month of Chaitra , this vow is made for Lord Viṣṇu. Chpater 54 of the Purāṇa discusses all the rules, principles and worship mantras of this vow.

Ādityaśayana Vow:

Lord Mahādeva has spoken of this vow for those who are not accustomed to fasting or are unable to fast due to illness but have a strong desire to get good results. In this vow, there is a provision to fast only during the day and not at night. Lord Śaṅkara is worshiped in this vow. This vow should be taken on the seventh day, Sunday or during the solstice, chapter 55 of the Matsya Purāṇa describes the rules of observing this vow. He who observes this vow is never separated from his friend, son, wealth and wife, and she who observes this vow is forever healthy, free from sorrow and grief.

Śrīkṛṣṇāṣṭami Vow:

Observance of this vow removes all sins. Man can always attain peace, liberation and victory. This vow is observed on the eighth day of Kṛṣṇapakṣa . The rules for observing this vow are mentioned in the 56th chapter of Matsya Purāṇa .

Rohinīcandraśayana Vow:

This vow is mentioned in the 57th chapter of Matsya Purāṇa . In this vow, lord Nārāyaṇa is worshiped by the name of Candra. If there is a full moon date on any Monday or the full moon Rohinī nakṣatra is added, that date is suitable for this vow. Chapter 57 describes all the rules and greatness of this vow.

Saubhāgyaśayana Vow:

This vow is observed on the second day of Śuklapakṣa in the month of Caitra . Bhagavatī Satī is the adored goddess of this vow. By observing this vow, all the desires of the mind are fulfilled. This rules and greatness of this vow are described in the 60th chapter of the Matsya Purāṇa .

Anantatṛtīyā Vow:

By observing this vow, these people get the result of good fortune and health. Suffering and salvation are gained and the enemy is destroyed. This vow is eternally auspicious. This vow is observed on the third day of Śuklapakṣa in the months of Bhādra , Vaiśākha , Pauṣa and Mārgaśīrṣa . The context of this vow is specified in the 62nd chapter of the Matsya Purāṇa .

Rasakalyāṇinī Vow:

This vow is observed on the third day of Śuklapakṣa in the month of Māgha . Observing this vow is equal to the result of a thousand Aginṣṭoma Yajña . Married, widow and unmarried if any women take this vow, they also get the same result. Chapter 63 of the Matsya Purāṇa gives all the information about this vow.

Ardrānandakārī Tṛtīyā Vow:

The exact time of this vow is the third date of Śuklapakṣa which is preceded by Purvāsādha, Uttarāsādha, Rohinī, Mārgaśīrṣa, Hasta or the Mūla nakṣatra constellation. In this vow, Goddess Bhavāni is worshiped along with the Mahādeva. By observing this vow, these people can gain wealth, longevity, silence and happiness. This vow is aptly described in the 64th chapter of the Matsya Purāṇa .

Akṣayatṛtīyā Vow:

This vow is observed on the third day of Śuklapakṣa in the month of Vaiśākha . In this vow Lord Viṣṇu is worshiped. By observing this vow, one can get the result of Rājsuya Yajña . Chapter 65 contains the details of this vow.

Sārasvata Vow:

By observing this vow, man becomes entitled to sweet words. His superiority among the masses increased. Good intellect, knowledge, and learning skills are gained and longevity is gained. The vow is observed on the fifth day. Although this vow is performed to please goddess Gāyatrī is performed in this Matsya Purāṇa .

Saptamīsnapana vow:

This vow is observed on any seventh day of Śuklapakṣa . This vow is the greatest, calms all guilt and is beneficial for boys. Chapter 68 describes about this vow.

Bhīmadvādaśī vow:

If one cannot fast on the eighth, fourteenth, twelfth day or any other constellation, then this vow of sin is especially significant for them. This vow is to be observed on the tenth day of Śuklapakṣa in the month of Māgha . Nārayaṇa is worshiped in this vow. The rules of this vow are indicate in the 69th chapter of the Matsya Purāṇa.

Paṇyastrī vow:

The vow is performed on any Sunday when the Hasta, Puṣya or Punarvasu nakṣatra are added. Goddess Lakṣmī is also worshiped along with lord Puṇḍarīkākṣa Nārāyaṇa. The rules of this vow are mentioned in the 70th chapter of the Matsya Purāṇa .

Aśuṇyaśayana vow:

This vow is observed on the second day of Kṛṣṇpakṣa in the month of Śrāvaṇa . Lord Govinda is worshiped in this vow. This form is said to be established by the Viṣṇu loka up to seven thousand seven hundred kalpas who observe this vow. This vow is described in the 71st chapter of the Matsya Purāṇa .

Angāraka vow:

This vow is made on the Tuesday that coincidens with the Caturthī . Lord Śaṅkara is worshiped in this vow. By observing this vow one becomes beautifull and fortunate and is immersed in devotion to Lord Viṣṇu and Śiva. This vow is mentioned in the 72nd chapter of the Matsya Purāṇa .

Kalyāṇa saptamī vow: If the seventh day Saptamī of Śuklapakṣa is Sunday then this vow should be observed on that day. In this vow, offerings this vow one is freed from all sins and longevity is gained by healing. This vow is discussed in detail in chapter 74 of the Matsya Purāṇa .

Viśokasaptamī Vow:

This vow is also performed by worshiping the Surya devatā . The saptamī tithi of Śuklapakṣa in the month of Māgha is the appropriate time for this vow. If this vow is observed, Parabrahma is obtained. Chapter 75 discusses the rules and regulations of this vow.

Phalasaptamī Vow:

By observing this vow, one is freed from sin and attains heaven. The proper time for this vow is the seventh day of the Śuklapakṣa of the auspicious month called Mārgaśīrṣa . The Surya is also worshiped in this vow. Chapter 76 deals with this vow.

Śarkarasaptamī Vow:

This vow is equally fruitful as Aśvamedha Yajña . This vow is observed on the Saptamī tithi of Śuklapakṣa in the month of Vaiśākha . The God Surya is also worshiped in this vow. Chapter 77 deals with this vow.

Kamalasaptamī Vow:

This vow is performed by worshiping the Surya devatā on the seventh day of the spring solstice. Those who observe this vow get eternal Lakṣmī. The rules of this vow are mentioned in the 78th chapter of the Matsya Purāṇa .

Mandarsaptamī Vow:

Saptamī tithi of Śuklapakṣa in the month of Māgha is the appropriate time for this vow. The one who keeps this vow never goes astray and gets the desired result. This is stated in the 79th chapter.

Subhasaptamī Vow:

The auspicious time for this vow is the saptamī tithi of the month of Āśvin . In this vow Kapila cow is worshiped. Whoever observes this vow will get a huge wealth, fame in every birth. The rules of this vow are discussed in the 80th chapter.

Viśokadvādaśī Vow:

This vow begins on the tenth day (Daśamī ) of the month of Āśvin and is completed on the twelfth day (Dvādaśī ). Lord Viṣṇu is worshiped in this vow. This vow in mentioned in the 81st chapter of the Matsya Purāṇa .

Māheśvara Vow:

The subject of this vow is mentioned in the 95th chapter of the Matsya Purāṇa . This vow is also known as Śivacaturdaśī which is on the fourteenth day (Caturdaśī ) of Śuklapakṣa in the month of Mārgaśīrṣa . Lord Śiva is usually worshiped in this vow.

Sarvaphalatyāga Vow:

This vow is initiated on the Dvitīyā, Aṣṭamī, Dvādaśī and Caturdaśī tithi of the Śuklapakṣa of the month of Mārgaśīrṣa. Chapter 96 deals with this vow.

Saṃkrānti Vow:

This vow should be made on the north and south of the sun (uttarāyana and Dakṣināyana ) or at the equinox (Viṣubasaṃkrānti ). The sun is worshiped in this vow. This vow is mentioned in the 98th chapter of the Matsya Purāṇa .

Vibhutidvādaśī Vow:

This vow is observed on the twelfth day of Kārtika, Chaitra, Vaiśākha, Mārgaśīrṣa, Fālguna and Āṣāda . The chief deity of this vow is Lord Nārāyaṇa. This vow is mentioned in the 99th chapter.
