Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Other Religion and Rituals’ of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

Candra Community

There are also some references to the Candra dynasty in the Matsya Purāṇa . For example–Lord Viṣṇu is worshiped in the name of Candra in the Rohinīcandraśayana vow (MP-57/3). Candravrata has also been mentioned (MP-101/75). In the Matsya Purāṇa’s 23rd chapter, the birth of Soma is mentioned which is the form of the Candra .

Buddhist

It is noteworthy that the Matsya Purāṇa also considers the Buddha to be an incarnation of Lord Viṣṇu. Buddha is mentioned in many chapters of the Matsya Purāṇa (MP-47/247, 54/19, 285/7).
