Chapter 5 - Outline of the Devala-Smriti

The present reconstructed text of Devalasmriti contains totally 2556 sutras & verses (2475 of the Devalasmrti-text + 81 of the Parisista of Devala on Jyotisa). They are arranged in three main adhyayas of acara, vyavahara & prayascitta (+parisista on Jyotisa). The total number of the sutras & verses in each of these three adhyayas, is 1530, 83 & 862 respectively. The above three main adhyayas are also sub-divided in separate chapters, called prakaranas. The total number of prakaranas in the acara adhyaya is twelve, that in the vyavahara adhyaya is four, & that in the prayascitta adhyaya is six. The 1 parisista on Jyotisa also contains four different sections or prakaranas.
