Appendix 9 - Chart of Ethnic Data provided by Various Puranas
APPENDIX IX CHART OF ETHNIC DATA PROVIDED BY VARIOUS PURANAS 1466 The geographical information is furnished by One style is popularly the Puranas in two styles. known as Karma Vibhaga style in which India is compared to a tortoise and the places and tribes are divided according to the directions in which the feet, and other parts of the tortoise lay. This style is followed by Brahatsamhita, Parasara and the Markandeya Purana. The other style divides India into seven parts, viz. Central, Northern, Eastern, Sourthern, Western and then follows a group of people residing in the Vindhya region which in its turn is followed by people called Paravatasrayins. This style is followed by the Brihma, Markandeya Vayu, Brahmanda, Matsya, Vamana, Garuda, Kurma and Visnu Puranas. As the Brahma Purana is not concerned with the first style, in this appendix, seven charts of the seven divisions are prepared according to the second style. As can be seen from the charts the lists of Vayu, Brahmanda,
1467 Markande 1/4Matsya, Vamana and Brahma resemble one another to a great extent and after carefully considering all the lists, Shri Chaudhari S.B. opines that the Matsya has borrowed from Vayu, the Markandeya also gives the same account as provided by Vayu but it has not directly borrowed from it but the account of Mark, is a critical revision of that of Vayu and the Brahma has copied from the Markandeya. As the lists are very corrupt and as they resemble one another to a very great extent, it is difficult to say who borrowed from whom, still the fact dearly emerges from the observation of the ethnic data, that when these Puranas were written a common list of people residing in different regions of India was well-known and each writer used it in this own way. The lists provided by Brahma, Vayu, Markandeya, Brahmanda, Matsya and Vamana are long and those provided by Garuda, Kurma and Visnu are short and meagre. The numbers in the following charts given to the various tribes are arranged according to their position in the puranas concerned and the names running in the same line should be taken as Parallel.
