This page relates ‘Examples of Parakiya Svadhinapatika’ of the study dealing with the Ashta-Nayikas—a classification of eight kinds of “Heroines” representing the eight emotional states (avastha) employed in the classical Indian dance and performing arts (otherwise known as Natya Shastra). These Ashtanayikas reflect the eight types of romantic relationships and have hence formed the expressive subject of many classical painting, poems and dramatic plays.

Part 10 - Examples of Parakīyā Svādhīnapatikā
Examples of the Pragalbhā variety of the Svādhīna-patikā character of woman heroine:
स्वीयाः सन्ति गृहे सरोरुहदृशो यासां विलासक्वणत् काञ्चीकुण्डलहेमकङ्कणझणत्कारो न विश्राम्यति ।
कोहेतुः सखि कानने पुरपथे सौधे सखीसन्निधौ भ्राम्यन्तीमपि वल्लभस्य परितो दृष्टिर्न मां मुञ्चति ॥svīyāḥ santi gṛhe saroruhadṛśo yāsāṃ vilāsakvaṇat kāñcīkuṇḍalahemakaṅkaṇajhaṇatkāro na viśrāmyati |
kohetuḥ sakhi kānane purapathe saudhe sakhīsannidhau bhrāmyantīmapi vallabhasya parito dṛṣṭirna māṃ muñcati ||[1]O! friend! There are deer eyed Svīyās (married wives) in every house whose gridles, ear rings and gold bangles do not stop making the special sound as they move. Yet how come my lover’s eyes searches for me every where–in the forest, gardens, on the road among friends etc. and never leaves me.
एतास्ताः प्रतिमन्दिरं मृगदृशो यासां न विश्राम्यति प्रोन्मीलत्पटु किङ्किणीकलकलप्रोद्दामकोलाहलः ।
किन्तु स्निग्धदृशा भृशं प्रतिवनं प्रत्यङ्गणं प्रत्यगं प्रत्यध्वानमहो गतां सखि समां कान्तः कथं नोज्झति ॥etāstāḥ pratimandiraṃ mṛgadṛśo yāsāṃ na viśrāmyati pronmīlatpaṭu kiṅkiṇīkalakalaproddāmakolāhalaḥ |
kintu snigdhadṛśā bhṛśaṃ prativanaṃ pratyaṅgaṇaṃ pratyagaṃ pratyadhvānamaho gatāṃ sakhi samāṃ kāntaḥ kathaṃ nojjhati ||[2]Her eyes which do not rest in every dwelling and whose bells are making extra ordinary commotion are but exclusively loved by the lover who follows her in every forest, every area by every means like a friend-he just does not quit. Here, since the hero follows like a friend, she is a Svādhīnapatikā but, the fact that her eyes do not rest and she keeps searching to see if somebody is watching indicates the secrecy in their relation, thus establishing her to be a Parakīyā.
अस्तु म्लानिर्लोकोलाञ्छनमपदिशतु हीयतामोजः ।
तदपि न मुञ्चति स त्वां वसुधाच्छायामिव सुधांशुः ॥astu mlānirlokolāñchanamapadiśatu hīyatāmojaḥ |
tadapi na muñcati sa tvāṃ vasudhācchāyāmiva sudhāṃśuḥ ||[3]Though in this world, the weak is betrayed by their stains, the ability does not wean. Just like that he does not leave you, like the moon which is like the shadow of the earth.
