5. Vishkambha (brief description of story)

In Natyashastra Bharata described the form of Vishkambha as given below:

The Arthopakshepaka with the features like ‘Madhyamacharacters, medium is in Sanskrit, a brief description of story likes praveshaka is called Vishkambha. It is of two types Shuddha (Madhyamapatras) and Sankirna (both Nica and Madhyama characters).

According to Dasharupaka

[...][2]

The explanatory scene which is presented by middling characters and is for the purpose of condensing, explains parts of the story that have happened or are about to happen.[3]

And in Sahityadarpana

[...][4]

As per the above mentioned rules of dramaturgy, the author fabricated the Vishkambha of Annadatricarita in the starting of the fourth act. This is a Sankirnavishkambha because it is performed by both nica and madhyama characters. Three soldiers, two army chiefs, Shakuni, Duryodhana and Karna are the characters appears in it.
