Chapter 4.21 - The Cakra (Shelduck) in the Epics

According to the Mrigapakshishastra [mriga-pakshi-shastra], There are three types of Cakra birds[1]. They are of different colours—black, white, red and blackish-red. They have an attractive round form. Something very special about them is that they separate at night but they meet their partners as soon as the sun rises. They live near ponds, lakes and other water reservoirs. They are fond of flowers and like water sports. They subsist on lotus flowers and insects. Spring is their mating season. After the eggs have hatched, the mother bird nurtures the chicks. When the chicks are two months old, they start flying. When they are fully grown they move away from their parents and settle near some ponds or lakes.
