The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

चित्रं मातरमेष कोकिलशिशुः संत्यज्य काकीं गतः सैषैनं तुदतीति यावदहमप्याचिन्तयामि क्षणम् ।
तावत्सोऽपि तथाशु मातृसदृशं श्लिष्टो रसाद्वर्धितुं यामायाति दिशं स्वभावसुभगः सैवास्य माहात्म्यदा ॥ ८१ ॥

citraṃ mātarameṣa kokilaśiśuḥ saṃtyajya kākīṃ gataḥ saiṣainaṃ tudatīti yāvadahamapyācintayāmi kṣaṇam |
tāvatso'pi tathāśu mātṛsadṛśaṃ śliṣṭo rasādvardhituṃ yāmāyāti diśaṃ svabhāvasubhagaḥ saivāsya māhātmyadā || 81 ||

It is to be wondered, that the young cuckoo forsakes its mother for its fostering crow; which on her part begins to prick it with its bill and claws. As I reflect on these, I find the young cuckoo growing in its form to the likeness of its mother; and hence I conclude, that the nature of a person prevails over his training every where.
