The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 7.116.64

कवलयति नरकनिकरं परिहरति मृणालिकां ध्वाङ्क्षः ।
यदतोऽस्तु मा स्मयस्ते स्वभ्यस्तं सर्वदा स्वदते ॥ ६४ ॥

kavalayati narakanikaraṃ pariharati mṛṇālikāṃ dhvāṅkṣaḥ |
yadato'stu mā smayaste svabhyastaṃ sarvadā svadate || 64 ||

We see the greedy rook, devouring ravenously the dirty filth, in preference to the sweet lotus stalk. It is no wonder that some would prefer sour to sweet, from their long and habitual taste of it.
