The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 7.3.31

यत्समूलं परित्यक्तं तत्त्यक्तमिति कथ्यते ।
अमूलकाषस्त्यागो यः स शाखालवनोपमः ॥ ३१ ॥

yatsamūlaṃ parityaktaṃ tattyaktamiti kathyate |
amūlakāṣastyāgo yaḥ sa śākhālavanopamaḥ || 31 ||

That is said to be wholly extirpated, which is drawn out by its roots, or else it is like the destroying of a tree by lopping its branches which will grow again, unless it is uprooted from the ground.
