The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
प्रवृत्तश्च निवृत्तश्च भवति द्विविधः पुमान् ।
स्वर्गापवर्गोन्मुखयोः शृणु लक्षणमेतयोः ॥ २ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca |
pravṛttaśca nivṛttaśca bhavati dvividhaḥ pumān |
svargāpavargonmukhayoḥ śṛṇu lakṣaṇametayoḥ || 2 ||

Vasishtha related:—Know Rama, mankind to be divided into two classes of the zealous and resigned (i.e. the active and the inactive); the one expectant of heavenly reward, and the other inclined to supreme felicity. Know now their different characters as follows:—
