देहे पुर्यष्टकं यावदस्ति तावत्स जीवति ।
शान्ते पुर्यष्टके देहो मृत इत्युच्यते द्विज ॥ ३१ ॥

dehe puryaṣṭakaṃ yāvadasti tāvatsa jīvati |
śānte puryaṣṭake deho mṛta ityucyate dvija || 31 ||

As long as the puryashtaka elements remain in the body, so long it lives and breathes; but these elementary powers being quiet and still, the body becomes inert and is said to be dead.
