The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
यदा ह्यस्तंगतप्रायं जातं चित्तं विचारतः ।
तदा हि वीतहव्यस्य जाता मैत्र्यादयो गुणाः ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca |
yadā hyastaṃgataprāyaṃ jātaṃ cittaṃ vicārataḥ |
tadā hi vītahavyasya jātā maitryādayo guṇāḥ || 1 ||

Vasishtha said:—After the sage Vita-havya, had subdued his heart and mind by his rationality, there arose in him the qualities of universal benevolence and philanthropy.
