The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 5.82.40

हन्यते यस्तु यच्छक्त्या स तेनैव हतो भवेत् ।
निहन्ति खड्गः पुंशक्त्या हन्तैव प्रोच्यते पुमान् ॥ ४० ॥

hanyate yastu yacchaktyā sa tenaiva hato bhavet |
nihanti khaḍgaḥ puṃśaktyā hantaiva procyate pumān || 40 ||

He who kills one by the instrumentality of another, is considered the slayer, and not the intermediate means of slaughter; for nobody upbraids the passive sword with guilt, by exculpation of the perpetrator.
