Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 5.67.41

ब्रह्महत्याश्वमेधाभ्यामसंसक्तो न लिप्यते ।
दूरस्थकान्तासंलीनमनाः कार्यैरिवाग्रगैः ॥ ४१ ॥

brahmahatyāśvamedhābhyāmasaṃsakto na lipyate |
dūrasthakāntāsaṃlīnamanāḥ kāryairivāgragaiḥ || 41 ||

The man not intentionally employed in the sacrifice of a horse or slaughter of a Brahman, neither reaps the good of the one, nor incurs the guilt of the other; and so the minds of distracted lovers are never aware of the results of their own deeds.
