The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

व्यवहारपरोऽत्युच्चै रागद्वेषमयोऽपि सन् ।
नान्तःकलङ्कमायाति पद्मो जलगतो यथा ॥ ७ ॥

vyavahāraparo'tyuccai rāgadveṣamayo'pi san |
nāntaḥkalaṅkamāyāti padmo jalagato yathā || 7 ||

Though the spiritual man is engaged in worldly affairs, and is subject to passions and affections; yet he is unstained by them in his heart, as the lotus bud is unsullied by the water under which it is sub-merged.
