The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 5.43.15

विना पुरुषयत्नेन दृश्यते चेज्जनार्दनः ।
मृगपक्षिगणं कस्मात्तदासौ नोद्धरत्यजः ॥ १५ ॥

vinā puruṣayatnena dṛśyate cejjanārdanaḥ |
mṛgapakṣigaṇaṃ kasmāttadāsau noddharatyajaḥ || 15 ||

It requires no exertion or manly effort to see the figure of Vishnu;but the mere sight of the image is not sufficient to save you, or else the birds and beasts would all be saved by looking at it.
