The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

प्रतिपक्षे कथं किंचिदास्ते च्छायातपे यथा ।
कथमास्ते तमो भानौ कथमास्ते हिमोऽनले ॥ ३१ ॥

pratipakṣe kathaṃ kiṃcidāste cchāyātape yathā |
kathamāste tamo bhānau kathamāste himo'nale || 31 ||

How can a thing remain with another, which is opposed to it in its nature? How can there be any shadow where there is light, and how does darkness reside in the disc of the sun, or even coldness in fire?
