The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

अस्ति कज्जलपङ्काद्रेरिवोग्रा शालभञ्जिका ।
हिमाद्रेरुत्तरे पार्श्वे कर्कटी नाम राक्षसी ॥ २ ॥

asti kajjalapaṅkādrerivogrā śālabhañjikā |
himādreruttare pārśve karkaṭī nāma rākṣasī || 2 ||

There lived on the north of Himalaya a heinous Rakshasi, by name of Karkati—a crooked crab; who was as dark as ink and stalwart as a rock, with limbs as strong as could split the sturdy oak.
