The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 3.56.38

धर्मदातुः प्रवृत्ता चेद्वासना तत्तया क्रमात् ।
आपूर्यते प्रेतमतिर्न चेत्प्रेतधियाशुभा ॥ ३८ ॥

dharmadātuḥ pravṛttā cedvāsanā tattayā kramāt |
āpūryate pretamatirna cetpretadhiyāśubhā || 38 ||

The pious gifts made on behalf of the departed souls, accrue to them as their own acts; and the sense which they thus acquire of their worthiness, fills them with better hopes and desires of their future state.
