The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 3.21.17

श्रीदेव्युवाच ।
पितामहस्मृतिस्तत्र कारणं तस्य न स्मृतिः ।
पूर्वं न संभवत्येव मुक्तत्वात्पूर्वजन्मनः ॥ १७ ॥

śrīdevyuvāca |
pitāmahasmṛtistatra kāraṇaṃ tasya na smṛtiḥ |
pūrvaṃ na saṃbhavatyeva muktatvātpūrvajanmanaḥ || 17 ||

The goddess replied:—Know that Brahma the first progenitor of mankind, who was absolute in himself, did not retain any vestige of his past remembrance in him.
