The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 3.11.14

क्वासंभवद्भूतजाड्यं पृथ्व्यादेर्जडवस्तुनः ।
कार्यकारणं भवितुं शक्तं छायायाश्चातपो यथा ॥ १४ ॥

kvāsaṃbhavadbhūtajāḍyaṃ pṛthvyāderjaḍavastunaḥ |
kāryakāraṇaṃ bhavituṃ śaktaṃ chāyāyāścātapo yathā || 14 ||

How is it possible for a dull material object to have any other cause but a material one; just as it is not the light (but some solid substance), that is the cause of a shadow.
