Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 3.2.29

न पूर्वाण्येष तेनेह न संसारवशं गतः ।
सहकारिकारणानामभावे यः प्रजायते ॥ २९ ॥

na pūrvāṇyeṣa teneha na saṃsāravaśaṃ gataḥ |
sahakārikāraṇānāmabhāve yaḥ prajāyate || 29 ||

It is produced without the co-operation of accompanying causes, and being free from prior motives, it is not subjected to the vicissitudes concomitant with human life.
