The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 2.18.9

पूर्वापरज्ञः सर्वत्र नरो भवति बुद्धिमान् ।
पदार्थानां यथा दीपहस्तो निशि सुलोचनः ॥ ९ ॥

pūrvāparajñaḥ sarvatra naro bhavati buddhimān |
padārthānāṃ yathā dīpahasto niśi sulocanaḥ || 9 ||

They are called the intelligent who know the cause and effect of things, and are likened to a torch-bearer who is clear sighted in the darkness of the night.
