The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 2.4.19

शास्त्रनियन्त्रितपौरुषपरमा पुरुषस्य पुरुषता या स्यात् ।
अभिमतफलभरसिद्ध्यै भवति हि सैवान्यथा त्वनर्थाय ॥ १९ ॥

śāstraniyantritapauruṣaparamā puruṣasya puruṣatā yā syāt |
abhimataphalabharasiddhyai bhavati hi saivānyathā tvanarthāya || 19 ||

The exertions of a man proceeding from his good efforts and countenanced by the law, lead to his success, or else they either go for nothing or turn to his disadvantage.
