The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 1.13.8

तावच्छीतमृदुस्पर्शाः परे स्वे च जने जनाः ।
वात्ययेव हिमं यावच्छ्रिया न परुषीकृताः ॥ ८ ॥

tāvacchītamṛdusparśāḥ pare sve ca jane janāḥ |
vātyayeva himaṃ yāvacchriyā na paruṣīkṛtāḥ || 8 ||

Men (by nature) are gentle and kind hearted to friends and strangers, until they are hardheartened by their riches, which like blasts of wind, serve to stiffen (the liquid) frost.
