[Read Sūtra 3.41]

“Organ of hearing” (Śrotrā) is that organ which perceives sound, and is produced by egotism. “Ether” (Ākāśā) is sky, the result of the subtle rudiment of sound (Śabdatanmātra). The “relation” (sambandha) between the two is that of the site and the situated. The Yogī who has performed Saṃyama with reference to it attains a superperfect organ of hearing (Divyaśrotra), and becomes able to hear simultaneously subtile, intercepted, and distant sounds.

Notes and Extracts

[Notes and comparative extracts from other commentaries on the Yogasūtra]

[The ether is the product of the rudiment of sound; and the organ of hearing is dependant on it for the performance of its unction; and if the relation between the two be brought under control by performing Saṃyama with reference to ether, the performer obtains the power of knowing it under all circumstances.]
