This page relates ‘Scope for Further Research’ of the English translation of the Yoga-sutras of Patanjali: an ancient Indian tradition spanning over 5000 years old dealing with Yoga:—Meditating the mind on the Atma leading to the realization of self. This study interprets the Yogasutras in light of both ancient and modern commentaries (e.g., Vyasa and Osho) while supporting both Sankhya and Vedanta philosophies.

Part 8 - Scope for Further Research

1. It is reiterated that this thesis is conceptual in nature. Based on the techniques mentioned in Pātañjala-Yogasūtras, further intensive research can be done by collection of practical data, analyzing it and drawing appropriate conclusions. The data also needs to be physically validated.

2. The author coming from professional corporate world suggests that, it can be matter of further research to check whether essentials of Pātañjala-Yogasūtras can be applied in the corporate world for–

  1. Improvement of Interpersonal relationships;
  2. Improvement of human work productivity;
  3. Improvement in skills and efficiencies;
  4. Improved emotional quotient and well being;
  5. Reduction of stress and psychosomatic disorders.

3. Application of fundamentals of Pātañjala-Yogasūtras in our education system is another area where there is further scope for research. The value based education which includes suggested practices of yamas and niyamas, improved physical attributes through practices of āsanas and kriyās and memory and concentration enhancement through prāṇāyāma, and meditation practices is another area where there is significant scope for further research.

4. Though the objective of Yoga as per Pātañjala-Yogasūtras for attaining the kaivalya state at individual spiritual level is beyond argument, the fact that several of the subsequent Haṭhayogic practices such as elaborate āsanas, śuddhikriyās, mudrās and bandhas etc. have proved their efficacy in treatment of some psychosomatic disorders cannot also be ignored. These are the secondary and therapeutic outcomes of the practices. More research in applied yogic practices can be done.

5. There is also further scope of scientific research in the field of antaraṅgayoga and to validate the higher states of consciousness.
