Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.9.23:
स्थितः संसर्गिभिर्भावैः स क्रियास्वनुगृह्यते ।
नैषां सत्तामनुद् गृह्य वृत्तिर्जन्मवतां स्मृता ॥ २३ ॥sthitaḥ saṃsargibhirbhāvaiḥ sa kriyāsvanugṛhyate |
naiṣāṃ sattāmanud gṛhya vṛttirjanmavatāṃ smṛtā || 23 ||23. The object which continues to exist becomes capable of fulfilling various purposes with the help of cooperating objects. Without accepting the existence of these objects, things born cannot perform any activity.
Commentary
[An object which continues to exist is capable of fulfilling some purpose with the help of other cooperating objects. Nothing does anything by itself. It does so only on the basis of the existence of cooperating objects. As it comes into contact with different cooperating objects, it fulfils various purposes and this is what is meant by continuity. The function of Time called ‘permission’ (abhyanujñā) extends up to the continuity of an object.]
