The Vaisheshika-sutra 2.2.15, English translation, including commentaries such as the Upaskara of Shankara Mishra, the Vivriti of Jayanarayana-Tarkapanchanana and the Bhashya of Chandrakanta. The Vaisheshika Sutras teaches the science freedom (moksha-shastra) and the various aspects of the soul (eg., it's nature, suffering and rebirth under the law of karma). This is sutra 5 (‘above continued’) contained in Chapter 2—Of the Five Bhutas, Time, and Space—of Book II (of substances).

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of Vaiśeṣika sūtra 2.2.15:

तथा दक्षिणा प्रतीची उदीची च ॥ २.२.१५ ॥

tathā dakṣiṇā pratīcī udīcī ca || 2.2.15 ||

tathā—similarly; dakṣiṇā—south; pratīcī—west; udīcī—north; ca—also.

15. South, West, and North also are similarly (distinguished).

Commentary: The Upaskāra of Śaṅkara Miśra:

Extending the same method to the use of the other directions also, he says:

[Read sūtra 2.2.15 above]

In the very same way, the use of the term, South, arises from the past, or future, or present conjunction of the sun with the mountain situated in the south direction. The use of the West and North also is to be similarly understood. Rightness and leftness (have their technical or recognised meanings, or) have been explained above.—15.
