The Vaisheshika-sutra 1.1.24, English translation, including commentaries such as the Upaskara of Shankara Mishra, the Vivriti of Jayanarayana-Tarkapanchanana and the Bhashya of Chandrakanta. The Vaisheshika Sutras teaches the science freedom (moksha-shastra) and the various aspects of the soul (eg., it's nature, suffering and rebirth under the law of karma). This is sutra 4 (‘above continued’) contained in Chapter 1—Of Substance, Attribute, and Action—of Book I (of the predicables).

Sūtra 1.1.24 (Above continued)

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of Vaiśeṣika sūtra 1.1.24:

गुणवैधर्म्यान्न कर्मणां कर्म ॥ १.१.२४ ॥

guṇavaidharmyānna karmaṇāṃ karma || 1.1.24 ||

guṇa-vaidharmyāt—on account of the difference of Attributes; na—Not; karmaṇām—of Actions; karma—Action.

24. Action is not the joint effect of many Actions, on account of the difference of their Attributes.

Commentary: The Upaskāra of Śaṅkara Miśra:

‘Kāryam’ is the complement. It has been already stated that the resemblance of Substance and Attribute is that they originate their congeners. Also it has been already denied that Actions are productive of Action, in the aphorism “Action producible by Action is not known” (I.i.II). This is here repeated. This is the idea.—24.
