त्रिरुक्तिश्चादरार्थेयमहमन्नमितीष्यते ।
अश्रद्दधानलोकस्य प्रतिपत्त्यर्थमुच्यते ॥ ८३ ॥
triruktiścādarārtheyamahamannamitīṣyate |
aśraddadhānalokasya pratipattyarthamucyate || 83 ||
English translation of verse 3.83:
The repetition of “I am food,” etc., three times is intended for the sake of conveying regard (for knowledge). It is uttered (thrice) with a view to create confidence in the minds of those people who lack it.
Notes:
This verse states the purport of the threefold repetition of “I am food” (ahamannam) by the knower of Brahman.
The same explanation holds good in the case of ahamannādaḥ and ahaṃ ślokakṛt, which are also repeated thrice as ahamannam. As in the case of swearing, the threefold repetition is meant to inspire confidence among the spiritual aspirants.
