The English translation of the Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu verse 4.9.3; a medieval era Sanskrit book, written by Rupa Goswami (fl. 15th century) which represents a devotional (bhakti) masterpiece. In this work Goswami describes the nature and different forms of pure love (rasa) as well as various other topics on Vaishnavism and devotion.

अत्र उपरसाः —
प्राप्तैः स्थायि-विभावानु-भावाद्यैस् तु विरूपताम् ।
शान्तादयो रसा एव द्वादशोपरसा मताः ॥४.९.३॥

atra uparasāḥ —
prāptaiḥ sthāyi-vibhāvānu-bhāvādyais tu virūpatām |
śāntādayo rasā eva dvādaśoparasā matāḥ
||4.9.3||

English translation

“When the sthāyī-bhāva, vibhāva and anubhāva take on distorted forms, the twelve rasas starting with śānta-rasa are called uparasa.”
