शुचेर् हास्यस् तथा प्रेयान् सुहृद् अस्य प्रकीर्तितः ।
द्विषो वत्सल-बीभत्स-शान्त-रौद्र-भयानकाः ।
प्राहुर् एके’स्य सुहृदं वीर-युग्मं परे रिपुम् ॥४.८.७॥śucer hāsyas tathā preyān suhṛd asya prakīrtitaḥ |
dviṣo vatsala-bībhatsa-śānta-raudra-bhayānakāḥ |
prāhur eke’sya suhṛdaṃ vīra-yugmaṃ pare ripum ||4.8.7||
English translation
“Hāsya and sakhya-rasa are the friends of madhura-rasa. Vatsala, bībhatsa, śānta, raudra and bhanāyaka-rasas are the enemies of madhura-rasa. Some say that yuddha-vīra and dharma-vīra-rasas are friends of madhura-rasa, though others say those two are enemies of madhura-rasa.”
