The English translation of the Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu verse 4.4.13; a medieval era Sanskrit book, written by Rupa Goswami (fl. 15th century) which represents a devotional (bhakti) masterpiece. In this work Goswami describes the nature and different forms of pure love (rasa) as well as various other topics on Vaishnavism and devotion.

रतिं विनापि घटते हास्यादेर् उद्गमः क्वचित् ।
कदाचिद् अपि शोकस्य नास्य सम्भावना भवेत् ॥४.४.१३॥

ratiṃ vināpi ghaṭate hāsyāder udgamaḥ kvacit |
kadācid api śokasya nāsya sambhāvanā bhavet
||4.4.13||

English translation

“Sometimes it is possible for hāsya and other emotions to appear without rati. However, śoka cannot manifest without rati.”
