The English translation of the Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu verse 4.4.7; a medieval era Sanskrit book, written by Rupa Goswami (fl. 15th century) which represents a devotional (bhakti) masterpiece. In this work Goswami describes the nature and different forms of pure love (rasa) as well as various other topics on Vaishnavism and devotion.

हृदि शोकतयांशेन गता परिणतिं रतिः ।
उक्ता शोक-रतिः सैव स्थायी भाव इहोच्यते ॥४.४.७॥

hṛdi śokatayāṃśena gatā pariṇatiṃ ratiḥ |
uktā śoka-ratiḥ saiva sthāyī bhāva ihocyate
||4.4.7||

English translation

“When rati transforms into lamentation in the heart by one’s perception of another person attaining misfortune, it is called śoka-rati. This śoka-rati is the sthāyī-bhāva of karuṇa-rasa.”
