The English translation of the Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu verse 4.4.1; a medieval era Sanskrit book, written by Rupa Goswami (fl. 15th century) which represents a devotional (bhakti) masterpiece. In this work Goswami describes the nature and different forms of pure love (rasa) as well as various other topics on Vaishnavism and devotion.

आत्मोचितैर् विभावाद्यैर् नीता पुष्टिं सतां हृदि ।
भवेच् छोक-रतिर् भक्ति-रसो हि करुणाभिधः ॥४.४.१॥

ātmocitair vibhāvādyair nītā puṣṭiṃ satāṃ hṛdi |
bhavec choka-ratir bhakti-raso hi karuṇābhidhaḥ
||4.4.1||

English translation

“When śoka-rati is nourished in the heart of the devotee by suitable vibhāvas
and other elements [of bhakti] it is called karuṇa-bhakti-rasa.
