The English translation of the Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu verse 2.5.125; a medieval era Sanskrit book, written by Rupa Goswami (fl. 15th century) which represents a devotional (bhakti) masterpiece. In this work Goswami describes the nature and different forms of pure love (rasa) as well as various other topics on Vaishnavism and devotion.

तथा च नाट्यादौ —
करुणादाव् अपि रसे जायते यत् परं सुखम् ।
सुचेतसाम् अनुभवः प्रमाणं तत्र केवलम् ॥२.५.१२५॥

tathā ca nāṭyādau —
karuṇādāv api rase jāyate yat paraṃ sukham |
sucetasām anubhavaḥ pramāṇaṃ tatra kevalam
||2.5.125||

English translation

This is confirmed in the statement of the Nātya-śāstra:
“The absolute proof that karuṇa and the other ‘negative’ rasas produce happiness is the experience of the soft-hearted devotees.”
