The English translation of the Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu verse 2.5.78; a medieval era Sanskrit book, written by Rupa Goswami (fl. 15th century) which represents a devotional (bhakti) masterpiece. In this work Goswami describes the nature and different forms of pure love (rasa) as well as various other topics on Vaishnavism and devotion.

शीतैर् भावैर् बलिष्ठैस् तु पुष्टा शीतायते ह्य् असौ ।
उष्णैस् तु रतिर् अत्युष्णा तापयन्तीव भासते ॥२.५.७८॥

śītair bhāvair baliṣṭhais tu puṣṭā śītāyate hy asau |
uṣṇais tu ratir atyuṣṇā tāpayantīva bhāsate
||2.5.78||

English translation

“The rati predominated by sorrow (such as the śoka-rati), when nourished by strong joyful vyabhicārī-bhāvas, becomes joyful. The sorrowful rati, when nourished by sorrowful bhāvas such as viṣāda, becomes more sorrowful and appears to give suffering.”
