The English translation of the Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu verse 2.5.39; a medieval era Sanskrit book, written by Rupa Goswami (fl. 15th century) which represents a devotional (bhakti) masterpiece. In this work Goswami describes the nature and different forms of pure love (rasa) as well as various other topics on Vaishnavism and devotion.

अथ गौणी —
विभावोत्कर्षजो भाव-विशेषो यो’नुगृह्यते ।
सङ्कुचन्त्या स्वयं रत्या स गौणी रतिर् उच्यते ॥२.५.३९॥

atha gauṇī —
vibhāvotkarṣajo bhāva-viśeṣo yo’nugṛhyate |
saṅkucantyā svayaṃ ratyā sa gauṇī ratir ucyate
||2.5.39||

English translation

Gauṇa-rati (secondary rati):
“When a different emotional state arising from the excellence of the ālambana (vibhāva) manifests while the primary rati subdues itself, it is called secondary rati.”
