The English translation of the Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu verse 2.5.1; a medieval era Sanskrit book, written by Rupa Goswami (fl. 15th century) which represents a devotional (bhakti) masterpiece. In this work Goswami describes the nature and different forms of pure love (rasa) as well as various other topics on Vaishnavism and devotion.

अविरुद्धान् विरुद्धांश् च भावान् यो वशतां नयन् ।
सु-राजेव विराजेत स स्थायी भाव उच्यते ॥२.५.१॥

aviruddhān viruddhāṃś ca bhāvān yo vaśatāṃ nayan |
su-rājeva virājeta sa sthāyī bhāva ucyate
||2.5.1||

English translation

“That bhāva which, controlling other favorable bhāvas such as hāsya, and contradictory bhāvas such as krodha, presides in the manner of an efficient ruler, is called the sthāyī-bhāva.”
