The English translation of the Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu verse 2.4.128; a medieval era Sanskrit book, written by Rupa Goswami (fl. 15th century) which represents a devotional (bhakti) masterpiece. In this work Goswami describes the nature and different forms of pure love (rasa) as well as various other topics on Vaishnavism and devotion.

हेतुः कश्चिद् भवेत् कश्चिद् गोप्यः कश्चन गोपनः ।
इति भाव-त्रयस्यात्र विनियोगः समीक्ष्यते ॥२.४.१२७॥
हेतुत्वं गोपनत्वं च गोप्यत्वं चात्र सम्भवेत् ।
प्रायेण सर्व-भावानाम् एकशो’नेकशो’पि च ॥२.४.१२८॥

hetuḥ kaścid bhavet kaścid gopyaḥ kaścana gopanaḥ |
iti bhāva-trayasyātra viniyogaḥ samīkṣyate
||2.4.127||
hetutvaṃ gopanatvaṃ ca gopyatvaṃ cātra sambhavet |
prāyeṇa sarva-bhāvānām ekaśo’nekaśo’pi ca
||2.4.128||

English translation

“Three bhāvas will be seen operating in this situation: one as a cause, one that is concealed and one bhāva that conceals another. Individually or as a group, the bhāvas may act as a cause, being concealed or concealing.”
