The Bhagavad-gita Verse 12.17, English translation, including the Vaishnava commentaries Sarartha-varsini-tika, Prakashika-vritti and Rasika-ranjana (excerpts). This is verse Verse 12.17 from the chapter 12 called “Bhakti-yoga (Yoga through Pure Devotional Service)”

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of verse 12.17:

यो न हृष्यति न द्वेष्टि न शोचति न काङ्क्षति ।
शुभाशुभ-परित्यागी भक्तिमान् यः स मे प्रियः ॥ १७ ॥

yo na hṛṣyati na dveṣṭi na śocati na kāṅkṣati |
śubhāśubha-parityāgī bhaktimān yaḥ sa me priyaḥ
|| 17 ||

yaḥ–who; na hṛṣyati–neither becomes elated (in achieving that which is desirable for the materialists); na dveṣṭi–nor detests (that which is not liked by materialistic persons); na śocati–neither laments (when he loses something that is dear to him); na kāṅkṣati–nor (for that which he does not have); śubha-aśubha–pious and impious actions; parityāgī–who fully renounces; bhaktimān–devoted person; yaḥ–who; saḥ–he; me–to Me; priyaḥ–dear.

He who neither delights upon attaining that which is pleasing to the materialists nor detests attaining something undesirable, who neither laments for the loss of anything dear to him nor hankers to attain some thing he does not have, who renounces pious and impious activities, and who has devotion to Me, that devotee is indeed dear to Me.

Commentary: Sārārtha-Varṣiṇī Prakāśikā-vṛtti

(By Śrīla Bhaktivedānta Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja; the explanation that illuminates the commentary named Sārārtha-varṣiṇī)

“Those devotees who neither become overwhelmed with joy when they beget a dear son or get a good disciple, nor feel hatred towards a wayward son or bad disciple, who do not become absorbed in lamentation at the loss of some desirable object nor desire something pleasing that they do not have, who do not engage in either pious or sinful activities and who are devoted to Me–they are dear to Me.”
