The Bhagavad-gita Verse 6.19, English translation, including the Vaishnava commentaries Sarartha-varsini-tika, Prakashika-vritti and Rasika-ranjana (excerpts). This is verse 19 from the chapter 6 called “Dhyana-yoga (Yoga through the Path of Meditation)”
Verse 6.19
Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of verse 6.19:
यथा दीपो निवात-स्थो नेङ्गते सोपमा स्मृता ।
योगिनो यत-चित्तस्य युञ्जतो योगम् आत्मनः ॥ १९ ॥yathā dīpo nivāta-stho neṅgate sopamā smṛtā |
yogino yata-cittasya yuñjato yogam ātmanaḥ || 19 ||yathā–as; dīpaḥ–a lamp; nivāta-sthaḥ–situated in a windless place; na iṅgate–does not flicker; sā–that; upamā–analogy; smṛtā–considered; yoginaḥ–of a yogī; yata-cittasya–whose mind is controlled; yuñjataḥ yogam–while practising communion; ātmanaḥ–in connection with the self.
A lamp in a windless place does not flicker. The yogī who restrains his mind through communion with the self should be always aware of this metaphor.
Commentary: Sārārtha-Varṣiṇī Ṭīkā
(By Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura; the innermost intention of the commentary named ‘the shower of essential meanings’)
A lamp does not flicker in a place where there is no breeze. The mind of an accomplished yogī is likened to such a lamp.
